The 17 day trek to Everest Basecamp in Nepal is the classic among trekking tours. The hike leads from Lukla straight through the land of the sherpas to the foot of the highest mountain in the world: Mount Everest. The views that you will see during this trek are among the most beautiful on this earth. On the way to Mount Everest base camp you will experience the Buddhist lifestyle of the locals while the background is dominated by mountains that easily rise above 7000 and 8000 meters. An absolutely unique trail with the beautiful Gokyo lakes for dessert.

Itenary

Day 1 (Arrival in Nepal)

Arrival in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. At the airport Momo Trekking is waiting for you to take you to the hotel.

Day 2 (Kathmandu)

Getting to know Kathmandu. We do an excursion to a number of temples and walk through the busy streets of Thamel, the tourist district of Nepal.

Day 3 (Kathmandu-Ramechap-Phakding)

Today you are introduced to the Himalayan giants for the first time. You fly from Ramechap to Lukla, a mountain village at 2800 meters. The flight is a true experience, because here you'll see for the first time the greatness of the white peaks that extend beyond the horizon. The landing on Lukla is exciting. From there we walk quietly towards Phakding to spend the night in a cozy guesthouse.

Day 4 (Phakding-Namche Bazaar)

We head to Namche Bazaar, the capital of the sherpas in Nepal. We follow a beautiful river, which we cross several times. We do this by using steel suspension bridges that sometimes hang dizzyingly high above the water. We are already starting to gain quite some height: Namche is almost 3500 meters.

Day 5 (Namche Bazaar)

Today we get used to the altitude. We climb to a viewpoint from which Mount Everest can be seen for the first time. We sleep another night in Namche.

Day 6 (Namche-Tengboche)

The goal for this day is Tengboche. The approach is easy with beautiful views of Ama Dablam and Mount Everest. The last climb to Tengboche (3900 meters) is hard but satisfying. In Tengboche you can admire the largest Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu Valley.

Day 7 (Tengboche-Dingboche)

We reach the altitude of 4000 meters for the first time when we walk towards Dingboche. We rise above the tree line and take a first look at the valley that leads us towards Mount Everest.

Day 8 (Dingboche)

This day is again about acclimatization and rest. In the morning we do a little trip to a viewpoint and the rest of the day is about getting used to the thin air (4400 meters).

Day 9 (Dingboche-Lobuche)

Today we head to Lobuche at 5,000 meters. We reach this village after a steep climb towards the memorial site for fallen Everest climbers.

Day 10 (Lobuche-Everest Basecamp)

The final goal is in sight. Today we take the trip to the base camp of Mount Everest (5500 meters). Here you take a look at the impressive Khumbu ice fall and see the world's highest mountain up close. We sleep in Gorak Shep, a collection of guesthouses.

Day 11 (Gorak Shep-Kala Pattar-Dzongla)

Today you will see the summit of Everest even better. We walk to Kala Pattar, which offers the best view of Mount Everest at an altitude of 5600 meters. After that we descend to Dzongla.

Day 12 (Dzongla- Cho la- Gokyo)

We cross the Cho La pass to the Gokyo Valley, where we can see the sacred lakes.

Day 13 (Gokyo Ri-Machermo)

We climb to Gokyo Ri, a fantastic viewpoint. Then descend towards Machermo.

Day 14-16 (descend to Namche and Lukla to fly back to Kathmandu)

Dag 17 (Kathmandu)

Back home!

Difficulty

The trek to Everest Basecamp is suited for the experienced hiker. You have to like excercising every day between 4 and 8 hours. In total you walk 130 kilometers during the trip. You do this with a light backpack. The rest of your bags are transported by local porters. The thin air makes the trip a bit more tough than for example a trip in the Alps. Every guest responds differently to this. That is why we do not rush anything and there is opportunity for the individual participant to complete his own acclimatization. An European and a Nepalese guide make sure you'll reach your goal.
